About Me

- Name: steve sharra
- Location: Ntcheu, Malawi
I study and write about Pan Afrikanism, Afrikan epistemology (uMunthu), the Afrikan Renaissance, peace and social justice studies, autobiography studies, and critical pedagogy. I trained at Lilongwe TTC; taught in Ntcheu; and was educational editor at the Malawi Institute of Education. I have published poetry and fiction, radio plays (MBC) and a radio short story (BBC); and authored a children's book, _Fleeing the War_, which won the 1995 British Council Write a Story competition. In 1997 I became honorary fellow of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (USA), after Prof. Emeritus Steve Chimombo (1983), and the late Edison Mpina (1984). In 1998 I was writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa. I was President of the Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) 1996-1998, and founding Treasurer, 1994-1996. I have an MA in English Education (University of Iowa, 2000), and a PhD in Teacher Education (Michigan State University, 2007). Until May 2010, I was visiting assistant professor of Peace and Justice Studies, Dept. of Philosophy, Michigan State University. I'm now back in Malawi working on the Teacher Professional Development Support (TPDS) project.
